“Bedda” is the Sicilian word for “beautiful” – and this is exactly how this fantastic region should be described.
CITY OF SCIACCA
Seaside, tourist and spa town, rich in monuments and churches, it is the most populous municipality in the province after the capital. It is known for its historic carnival and pottery.
How not to be enchanted by the pastel colours of the buildings that are reflected in the cobalt blue sea, with the picturesque fishing boats docked at the port, elements that, taken together, transform Sciacca into a real living postcard. Built with an amphitheatre shape, it overlooks the sea along a spur called Coda di Volpe.
Famous for its pottery, the streets of the city are embellished with decorated vases of all shapes and colours. The architecture of the center is heavily influenced by the Arab and Norman influence, which is why the city is historic surrounded by thick defensive walls, interspersed from time to time by ancient gates, among which splendid palaces of the aristocracy of the past emerge.
Sciacca is also a spa town. It was the Romans, famous spa lovers, who were the first to exploit the warm waters of Sciacca, calling them “Thermae Selinuntinae”. In the 1950s the first establishment was born and today it is a spa tourism resort as well as a seaside resort. The beaches are outside the city. About 7 km away is the Capo San Marco beach, which can be reached by car and then on foot along a path shaded by palm trees, while heading south you arrive at Torre del Barone Beach, at the foot of a dazzling white cliff.
CASTELVETRANO AND SELINUNTE, The biggest archeological park in Europe
Selinunte, its name is after the celery, which grows flourishing in the ancient city and whose leaves are found on a panther head on the local coin of the sixth century BC, one of the very first minted in Sicily:
This is Selinunte! in ancient time rich and densly popolate, today included in the largest European archeological park , which extends for 270 hectares, with two main entrances, with its acropoli, necropoli and three hills.
The temples included in this large area are the best evidences of the doric architecture, marked for its simpleness, record of proportions and amazing metope where are sculptured universal scenes, as Perseo killing Medusa.
Another embleme of Selinunte culture is the bronze Efebo, kept at Castelvetrano museum. But also the urban planning and the artistic heritage votive and funerary.
Don’t forget to visi the Mother’s Church and San Domenico’s Church in Castelvetrano be named the “Cappella Palatina Siciliana”
Do not miss the seaside resorts, the natural reserve of Foce del Belice, where you might see the turtle Caretta Caretta and the “fish enchantment”, a traditional auction, in via Scalo di Bruca, starting from 7 in the morning, where fishermen sell what fished during the night.
Valley of the Temples in Agrigento
The rediscovery of Akragas began towards the end of the eighteenth century, when the first European travellers reached Sicily, discovering an unexpected and immense artistic, archaeological heritage.
In a almost enchanted valley, full of almond trees in bloom, it is the most impressive group of monuments of the Hellenic architecture in Sicily. The unique charm of this site is in this blend of cultural environment and natural landscape.
The Valley of the Temples is certainly the most important testimony of the ancient, classical culture of Sicily. It brings together the temples of gods goddesses as well as the area of the necropolis and sanctuaries outside the walls.
SCALA DEI TURCHI
This white cliff is located along the stretch of the sea between Realmonte and Porto Empedocle (Agrigento) and its rock is made of a soft, limestone and blinding white marl. Nature, as a great artist, has worked this material over time, making it soft and sinuous, with the help of the sea and the salty breeze, creating terraces and smoothing every corner.
The sea, taking advantage of this sparkling white, will be showing off his blue.
